Pitt 'loved' voicing animated Metro Man, Tom McGrath tells MTV News, as executive producer Ben Stiller jokes they wanted to give A-lister 'a break.'

"Megamind," DreamWorks' latest animated comedy, hits theaters on Friday, with a star-studded Hollywood cast that includes Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and Brad Pitt. And while funnymen Ferrell and Stiller are no strangers to comedic work, A-list actor Pitt is a bit of a newbie to the genre.
The film tells the story of a super-villain named Megamind, voiced by Ferrell, who has repeatedly attempted — and failed — to conquer Metro City. Instead, the town's studly hero Metro Man (Pitt) has managed to defeat him every time.
Although Pitt has played a multifaceted range of characters onscreen, until the role of Metro Man came along, he had yet to add an animated hero to his résumé. When MTV News caught up with "Megamind" director Tom McGrath and executive producer Stiller, the two men explained what made the part appealing to Pitt.
"He loved the idea. He loved the character and playing that kind of character that has a couple levels to him," McGrath said. "You know, he's not just the cardboard hero, he's got another layer to him — not to give anything away — and he's funny."
Pitt's reputation as one of the most attractive men in the movie business certainly was not a consideration when the decision was made to cast him in the animated flick. Stiller said he thought he would actually be doing Pitt a favor by offering him this kind of role.
"We wanted to give him a break. We felt like he could use a boost right now in his career," Stiller joked. "We figured things aren't really popping with the on-camera work, maybe the voice thing will get him something. So I'm hoping he'll owe us for this one."
What do you think of Brad Pitt flexing his comedic chops in an animated flick? Tell us in the comments!

Not one to shy away from showing a little skin, Aubrey O?Day treated fans to a little bit of her sexiness with a recently posted Twitter pic.
The former Danity Kane singer stripped down in the buff as she joined a gal pal for a sauna session, tweeting, "Me and @krystalbronson naked in my house sauna! wurk."
The post comes as Miss O'Day has been busily working on a new reality project for the Oxygen network.
Talking to MTV News about the gig, Aubrey said, "Well, Oxygen's motto is living out loud, so I would say you're going to see Aubrey O'Day living out loud. I don't think I've not done that, but obviously my voice is a bit outspoken, and I really don't play by anyone's rules, so I think you'll see a lot of that rebellious tendency that I have."
Of the upcoming show, the 24-year-old added, "But also [you'll] get to see what it's really like to be me and the honest truth of what I'm really like as well as on the business side. I'm recording my first solo album, so it's following the entire recording process."

Concerns over stunt safety could block show's November 14 performance.

Some musical projects are just cursed. Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy. The Beach Boys' Smile. And now the beleaguered Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" — with music by Bono and the Edge of U2 — seems like the next candidate for that list. The latest setback: It will likely miss its first preview performance on November 14 because of concerns raised by the New York State Department of Labor.
According to the New York Times, inspectors from the DOL visited the production on Wednesday (November 3) but were only shown a handful of the two dozen aerial stunts and maneuvers that are executed over the course of the show. One of those stunts — which launches an actor from the back of the stage and over the audience — has already injured two performers, one of whom broke both of his wrists after crashing onto the stage.
Because the DOL must approve all of the stunts before the show is allowed to be shown to the public, the inspectors will have to schedule another visit. That visit is not likely to occur by the show's first scheduled preview.
"We made it clear that we need to see every maneuver before they are legally allowed to hold their first performance," explained Department of Labor spokesman Leo Rosales. "This is a unique production, with an unprecedented amount of activity going on directly above audiences, so we want to see each one of those activities demonstrated."
"Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has been something of a boondoggle from the start. Production has been shut down twice due to budget concerns, and an original launch date of February 2010 had to be scrapped when funds dried up. All told, the musical is said to have cost a cool $60 million — more than twice the previous record for the most expensive Broadway show ever produced.
Are you planning on seeing the "Spider-Man" musical? Let us know in the comments!

With the latest Kate Plus 8 episode -- "Alaska, Here We Come!" -- set to air on Sunday (TLC, 9 p.m. E.T.), it's worth asking an obvious question: Has America lost interest in this over-hyped family, fascinating as their story is? Jon and Kate Gosselin's dirty laundry first became a national obsession over a year and a half ago, when Jon's affair was first reported. Every weepy interview Kate gave was covered from all angles by the press. Every juvenile move Jon made was critiqued in tabloids and devoured by readers in hair salons and supermarket checkout aisles, nationwide. Some wondered, "Will it ever end?"

Cranking out scenes for their new movie, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy were spotted on the set of ?This Means War? yesterday (November 4).
The two Hollywood hunks looked a bit roughed up as they filmed a fist fight, complete with fake blood and bruises on location in Vancouver, Canada.
In related news, Chris turned 30 years old earlier this year, and he told press he?s much tamer than most of his Tinseltown contemporaries.
?Yeah, there were lots of strippers and lots of drugs? I?m joking. Actually, I saw a lot of friends, drank some great red wine, had a nice dinner. Although I?m like a premature grandfather. It gets to 2am and I kind of hit a wall, and I can usually only handle three drinks anyway.?

Catya is accustomed to the finer things in life and plans on living the life of luxury as long as she can.
So reads the online profile for Catya Washington, a member of Oxygen's Bad Girls Club in Miami. Unfortunately for this trouble maker, she may need to change her perception of luxurious from high class clubs to top notch cigarette brands, as she's been arrested on a number of series charges.
As first reported by TMZ and confirmed by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, Washington was arrested yesterday for cocaine, mushroom and ecstasy possession. She also had a gun on her.
The busty realty star was booked on five counts, including possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; possession of drug paraphernalia; and possession of an instrument of crime. She's being held on $500,000 bail and is due in court on November 22.

Imagine going instantly from eight months in pitch-black darkness into the blazing sunlight. Or starving yourself and then sitting down at an endless buffet with every kind of rich food you can imagine.
That may be what rapper Lil Wayne felt like Thursday (November 4) as he celebrated his release from prison after eight months behind bars, including a final stretch in solitary, according to psychotherapist Allison Bobick, director of student advancement at New York's Touro College Graduate School of Social Work.
(For photos of Lil Wayne after his release from prison, click here.)
"The danger is when you have been deprived of something and then get it in excess, you swallow it and take it up in excess and it becomes a rush, it becomes an extreme version," said Bobick, who specializes in anxiety and bereavement and who works with an internship program at Touro that gives ex-cons help in getting their masters in social work. "They're both extremes, and whenever you have those extremes, it prohibits you from living a healthy lifestyle."
WEEZY WATCH Bookmark weezywatch.mtv.com for MTV News' complete, round-the-clock coverage of Lil Wayne's prison release and the ensuing homecoming celebrations. |
Bobick said rather than the normal balance of being alone sometimes and spending some time with family and friends, Wayne faces going from complete solitude to suddenly being thrust in front of dozens of people and, if he shows up, as rumored, at Drake's show Saturday in Las Vegas, thousands of people.
"You get lost in there somewhere," she cautioned. "You're nobody's or you're everybody's, and that's an extreme way of living." Though many prisoners face self-esteem issues after their release because of the shame they feel for spending time behind bars, or anxiety when someone asks about their incarceration, it's possible Wayne may not have those same issues. As a world-famous rapper with an eff-the-world attitude and a career that stayed afloat while he was at Rikers thanks to his Young Money cohorts and a hit album, I Am Not a Human Being, Weezy should be able to step right back into the limelight without worries about how his fans are perceiving him.
But the more dangerous pitfall for Wayne — who has never shied away from rapping about his love of illegal substances — is the potential of using those drugs as a crutch to deal with his intense emotions, Bobick said. "If he is already someone who has a difficult time coping with his emotions and he has to numb them, now you go from the emotion of complete isolation to a massive embrace," she said. "Those are strong emotions, and you won't necessarily be able to cope any better than in the past, and it may be even more intense."
Because a prison sentence — especially one that involves time in solitary, as well as the kind of segregated protective custody famous people like Wayne are subject to for their own safety — is such an isolating experience, Bobick said Wayne may also find that those around him are unable to fully grasp his emotions upon release.
"For people to cope in the world and to be emotionally and mentally healthy, you need intimacy in your life, and that's somebody knowing you," she said. "When you're onstage, you may be loved, but it's not like you're known. It's like Michael Jackson: loved by millions, known by none. Nobody knows what you experienced, and even if they give you a welcome party, there's a piece missing. Is someone asking, 'How was it for you?' Is anyone asking how he tolerated those eight months? I wonder if he will suffer from that because of the extremes. Will it really hit home and will he feel loneliness or isolation?"

After fours years of dating, Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey have announced their engagement. Said the pair in a statement:
"We're excited and incredibly happy about our engagement and we look forward to a wonderful future together."
Lachey rose to fame thanks to his first marriage, as he and Jessica Simpson chronicled their relationship in the kind of reality show that wasn't common place back in the day. They got divorced soon after it went off the air.
Minnillo is a former MTV VJ and aspiring actress. She guest-starred on CSI: NY last year alongside Kim Kardashian, an ex-girlfriend of her new fiance.
We wish these two all the best and have one piece of advice for the duo: a couple that does NOT film a reality show together stays together.

This year's "Today" show Halloween segment may have been short on Matt Lauer, but the show made up for it thanks to cameos from Will Ferrell and Tina Fey as their "Megamind" characters. But even those superstars were upstaged by some crafty costumes worn by the "Today" show hosts Friday morning (October 29).
In what turned out to be one complex segment, the Halloween fun started with Lauer and Roker looking at "Megamind" footage in a pretaped segment. Then the story went a bit zany. As Roker escorted a Clark Kent-looking Lauer out of the building, Lauer used his highly sensitive hearing to sense that Fey was in trouble.
In order to become Superman, he entered a phone booth to call Ferrell's Megamind to meet up with him, and out came Roker, in Lauer's place, as Superman. Ferrell and Roker then rushed to the side of Fey (dressed as "Megamind" reporter Roxanne Ritchi) to save her and toss to an old-timey newsreel, in which Ann Curry made her entrance as Amelia Earhart, who apparently had been hiding out in 30 Rock for the better part of a century.
Once she reemerged in the modern world, Earhart said she'd noticed that a lot has changed. Like what? Well, music. With that, Natalie Morales came out playing a convincing Justin Bieber, all the way down to the dance moves during "Baby."
But it was Meredith Vieira as the "monster of all monsters," Lady Gaga, dressed in the Armani orbit gown the singer wore to the Grammy Awards earlier this year, that really upped the production value. She sang the pop star's hit "Bad Romance," complete with backup dancers.

Fact: Kim Kardashian is recording an album.
Possible fact: the first single from it is posted below.
While some outlets claim the following single, "Shake," is Kim's first foray into the pop world, other sources deny the reality star is actually on vocals.
We're torn.
It does seem sudden for Kim to already have put together a song - but anything she releases will just be done through Auto-Tune anyway, so how difficult can that be to arrange? Moreover, "Shake" would be an appropriate title, wouldn't?

Not having the best of luck behind the wheel, Justin Long fell victim to a minor car accident in Los Angeles, California during which he suffered a minor concussion.
The 32-year-old "Taking Chances" actor had to cancel an appearance at the SCAD Film Festival due to the unfortunate incident, though a source tells People, "He's completely fine now."
As for the aborted trip to Savannah, Long was set to promote his upcoming movie "The Conspirator," which was directed by Robert Redford while co-starring Evan Rachel Wood and James McAvoy.
Aside from "The Conspirator," the on/off beau of Drew Barrymore recently released an animated flick titled "Alpha and Omega" about "two young wolves at opposite ends of their pack's social order being thrown together into a foreign land and needing each other to return home, although love complicates everything."

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.
It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

At 72 years old, Jane Fonda is making a comeback! The Academy Award-winning actress and fitness icon has relaunched both her careers, returning to the stage and screen while creating a new line of exercise DVDs aimed at older adults. She also keeps a blog and is working on a second memoir. So what keeps Jane Fonda going after all these years? She recently told Oprah Winfrey that she owes her extended youth to grandkids, a new boyfriend, her work ... and plastic surgery.
"I look more like how I feel," Fonda said during her appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. "I'm glad I did it."
The actress made a pact never to get plastic surgery in 2000 (she was already in her 60s), but says she got tired of looking in the mirror and seeing an exhausted-looking "stranger" staring back at her. Fonda now freely admits she had work done on her chin, neck and eyes.
"I think it's just getting better!" Fonda exclaimed, when Oprah asked if she feels as good as she looks. And what, prodded Oprah, does she see when she looks in the mirror now?
"Good work," joked Fonda.
We love Jane Fonda's sassy attitude, and even though she broke her public anti-plastic surgery vow, we just can't hold it against her. The lady waited until she was 72! And she didn't do anything extreme, like getting a huge "trout pout"; she still looks like herself. (In fact, she told Oprah that letting go of "a toxic desire to try and be perfect" was the key to her happiness.) Best of all: she's totally upfront about her plastic surgery, which is extremely rare among Hollywood actresses. It's obvious that cosmetic surgery isn't going away anytime soon, so we hope that other actresses follow Jane Fonda's example: Don't go overboard and don't be embarrassed to admit it.
Do you think plastic surgery is a good way to feel younger? Chime in below!

Britney Spears and Heather Morris on the set of "Glee"

Madonna's "Glee" tribute episode might have been titled "The Power of Madonna," but it was the show's tribute to Britney Spears that reigned supreme. The broadcast, which featured cameos from the pop princess herself, drew 13.3 million viewers, leading the 8 p.m. hour and posting its best-ever rating among adults 18-49.
Tuesday night's episode, appropriately titled "Britney/Brittany," had a 5.8 rating and rose 4 percent from last week's season-two premiere. The feat made history for "Glee," as it becomes the first series since NBC's "Seinfeld" in 1993 to debut as the top series of the week and then spike in ratings the following week, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The episode, which highlighted Heather Morris' character Brittany S. Pearce, revolved around the McKinley High students' fight to perform Britney Spears numbers. Through anesthesia-induced sequences, the Gleeks tapped into their inner pop star to perform renditions of the singer's hits, including " ... Baby One More Time" and "Me Against the Music."
In addition to Spears' appearances on the hit Fox show, the singer took to Twitter during the West Coast premiere to thank fans for campaigning in support of the episode. "I loved it! Thank you guys SO much for making this happen!" she tweeted. The pop princess also gave props to the many song and video re-creations, including "I'm a Slave 4 U," saying, "Slave: Oh ... My ... God ...! Those little boys are SO cute! I know how hard it is to dance with that snake! Nice job."
Spears' manager, Adam Leber, also showed his appreciation for the episode, which spawned multiple trending topics on Twitter. "So glad you guys loved the GLEE episode! The Overwhelming worldwide response has been insane.3 of the top 10 worldwide trending topics.Sick! Big big big thank you to Ryan Murphy, the incredible cast and Brit's fans for making it happen...."
After such success, it wouldn't be surprising if the rumors of a second Spears-devoted episode came true, since "Britney/Brittany" only included hits from the first few years of the singer's career.

'I'm getting more and more nervous,' 'Tik Tok' singer says of finding out whether she'll take home a Moonman.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jayson Rodriguez
Ke$ha is ready to storm the VMAs on Sunday to see if she can turn any of her three nominations into Moonmen. The "Tik Tok" singer — who is up for Best Female Video, Best New Artist and Best Pop Video — is not only feeling some pre-show jitters, she's still floored by the fact that she's up for any awards at all.
"I'm getting more and more nervous," she told MTV News on Saturday in Los Angeles, where she performed at the 2010 MTV VMA Concert to Benefit Lifebeat. "To be nominated at all has been just crazy. It's still kind of blowing my mind."
And there's a bit of fear in there as well. "I'm a little terrified about it still," she continued. "It's amazing really to be recognized for things I've written, really just being honest. And now I'm being nominated for three VMAs for that."
While she faces stiff competition across the board, she admits that her toughest rival might be Justin Bieber, who's also nominated for Best New Artist. "It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down," she explained. "It's gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!"
Ke$ha may have a wild rep, but she only has nice things to say about the ladies she's facing in the Best Female Video category. "Gaga and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — everybody in there I respect, so it's kind of like I have no disses to throw," she said. "That's a tough category."
Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The star power at the upcoming American Music Awards just got kicked up a notch — or 20. In addition to the previously announced performance from Christina Aguilera, the November 21 show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles will feature the debut AMA appearances from three of music's hottest young stars.
Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Ke$ha will all perform at the show alongside a roster of veteran acts including Bon Jovi, Pink and Usher. Fittingly, all three newbies are also nominated for Artist of the Year, a category that features heavy-hitters Eminem and Lady Gaga as well. Em and Lady Antebellum lead all nominees with five apiece.
"As a small-town kid from Canada, I never imagined that I would be nominated for AMAs, let alone be performing on the show," Bieber said, according to The Associated Press, which added that the 16-year-old professed to feel "extremely humbled and honored" by the invitation to play the show.
More presenters and performers will be announced in coming weeks.
"Justin, Katy and Ke$ha have been on the top of the charts all year long. We are happy to see each of them make their own AMA history," AMA producer Larry Klein said in a statement announcing the additions. Bieber is nominated in four categories overall, while Ke$ha and Perry are up for three awards.
Winners will be determined by online voting at AMA.ABC.com.
Who are you most excited to see perform at the AMAs? Let us know in the comments!

Despite his numerically enhanced stage name, math isn't quite the strongest subject for 2010 VMA house artist deadmau5, who released the first bomb from his highly anticipated compilation album 4x4=12 on Sunday.
"My math sucks," the producer told MTV News. "I was talking on Ustream, and I was trying to explain to people about my setup, and I was like, 'Yeah, it's in four banks of four, and that equals 16,' and they were like, 'Dude, that's 12'! Everyone started saying it over and over again, and it just caught on."
Erroneous arithmetic aside, deadmau5 is hoping for big numbers from the album's debut single, "Sofi Needs a Ladder," which hit iTunes on Sunday and Beatport on Monday (November 1).
Starting with a chaotic, white-noise intro, the song builds with the wobbly electro stutter of a synth, an anthemic snare beat and then a thumping sinister hook with chest-crushing base. The intoxicating female vocals are courtesy of Sofia "Sofi" Toufa, who just happens to be the girlfriend of deadmau5's best pal and partner in mischief Tommy Lee.
"We're just a little family, I guess, so when I'm out in L.A., I'm living there and working with them and just hanging out basically, and it just so happens, she can sing a note!" Mau5 said of the collaboration with Sofi. "I asked her if she wanted to do vocals in the track, and she obliged, and I've done a number with her now."
Deadmau5 doesn't want his fans to just sit back and enjoy his new tune. He's also teamed up with Beatport to hold a remix contest. Whoever puts the best spin on his original will not only score a slew of goodies, but will also get to open for the man himself at an upcoming show.
"There a lot of kids who are very talented and want to do these remixes anyway, and upload them on to YouTube, and all that stuff," Mau5 explained. "But a lot of the really good ones don't get the recognition they deserve. So, might as well make it official; do a contest, have them open up at a show with it and do his own little set, and that's awesome."
The second 4x4=12 track featuring Sofi, "One Trick Pony," will be released in early December when the full album hits shelves. Until then, the producer said he'll release a new song each week for the next four weeks, including the piano-laced dub-step experiment "Raise Your Weapon" and the siren-infused electro house banger "Bad Selection."
